I had the pleasure of having Porsche in my studio for a session last week. She was beaten with a baseball bat and left for dead. Despite her trials and tribulations Porsche is one of the most loving and lovely dogs I've met. She's a true testament to the goodness of an animal soul.

This series of portraits was commissioned by the NSC Rescue - a no kill shelter here in Denver. The black and white portraits are available for a limited time and all proceeds from their sale will go to NSC Rescue to help them fight animal abuse and care for the many unwanted dogs and cats in their care.

In Celebration of Dance - a photographic exhibition

I'm fairly thrilled to have been invited to show my dance photography. This is the first time I've put personal work on such a large display and it has been a lot of fun. For this project I worked with dancers from across the US and Canada. The show features Modern, Lyrical, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Break Dancers.

If you're in Denver, swing by 200 Clayton St in Cherry Creek. The show is free to view, appropriate for all ages and open from 10-6 every day except Sunday when it closes at 4pm.

Meet Michael

It's been a busy 1st quarter so I'm going to trickle in some of the projects for you to see. First I'd like you to meet Michael, music producer extraordinaire. We did a session in my denver photography studio to create a headshot that would stand out from the crowd of corporate gray backgrounds. Michael, like many of my clients, also wanted something that would allow him leeway on social media to project a contemporary image that was still professional.

Fitness Photographer in Denver

Technically this photo shoot took place in the last moments of 2009, but thanks to a delightfully busy schedule I'm just now bringing it your way. Meet Brian, cover model, fitness guru and natural body builder. Brian came to visit from Phoenix and we were able to capture some great studio shots. Happy 2010. So far I couldn't ask for a better start. I had the pleasure of photographing the creative geniuses behind L.A. based Eclipse Productions this week. They're a young, hip and growing company with a number of online presences. We were able to plan our vision for the shoot to capture a wide range of photos of each of the principles for use in a variety of online applications. Because their company spans many genre's it was essential that we create photographs appropriate to each online venue.

There are few days that pass without at least a dozen photo ideas intruding on my thoughts. This week seems to be producing a bumper crop. I've spent the week doing corporate headshot photography for Wachovia, an engineering firm and this attempt at freeing some of my ideas from the confines of my brain.

This photo, like the motion blur car shot below was created entirely in camera. Special thanks to Lauren for her talent and doing it "exactly like that with one change" 20 times.

A Bit of Glamour Photography

This week I had the pleasure of spending a little time with Robi for a new project featuring some of the most fun people I've photographed to date. One of the things I most love about my work as a photographer in Denver is the variety of people I get to meet. We're less than half into the month and I've been working with board members, a geologist, two body builders, and doing a marathon session with 15 very talented and totally hilarious young actors. Of course, I can't forget the reason for this post - Robi. Robi is a drag queen with a heart of gold. Look for more in my new series of Drag Queens in the coming weeks. (by the way, Robi did his own makeup and hair and has a salon at 12th and Santa Fe. His work is awesome.)

I've mentioned before that I have a blast working as a photographer for headshots in Denver, but it's worth saying again. Last weekend I spent a few long but very pleasurable days with the amazing Nicky Lee and a host of very talented stage actors and dancers in Boulder CO. We (at least me) had a blast creating images for their auditions and collecting a few very fun out-takes like these. Tucker (pictured) has amazing range and gave me two of my favorite actor photographs in a day full of great photos. Thanks so much to David and Angela for organizing everyone. Keep your eyes peeled for Tucker and his classmates. They're going to go far.

I'm a pretty basal person when it comes to what I like visually. I do appreciate nuance and humor and subtlety, but sometimes I just really like pretty pictures with great color. Harold and I teamed up again with his 51 Merc for this shot. We managed not to get the car stuck, not to catch west nile, and to get a few nice photos in the evening. What do you think?

Another look at automobile photography

I'm often asked if I miss the darkroom and frequently surprise people when I answer with an unequivocal "no." I don't miss bad fumes, heaps of paper spent making the perfect guide print and the sharp corner of my darkroom table that never hurt quite enough to round off, but still ate my hip weekly. I DO, however, miss the results. Ilford HP5 on a nice oriental warm tone paper could make for a delightful print. Even more so when it was printed by someone with true skills like Tim at Amaranth Photo lab in Boulder (now closed sadly).

The photo above is one of the first shots we did for the car shoot below. We had a few questionable minutes while nature decided not to rain and security decided whether my credentials were legit. The edits you see took about an hour and I was specifically going for a look reminiscent of the Oriental papers I love.

Before you look at the car photo in it's enlarged state, check this simple monitor calibration chart out. if you can see all of the different bars of gray and black on the chart you're more likely to see all of the shadow and highlight detail in the black and white photo.

Classic Hot Rod Photography

I've been working on a fun personal project here lately and thought I'd share an initial result with those of you stopping by. I've had this concept in my head for a while and as luck has it the location that most closely fit what I wanted was off limits to professional photography. After some serious phone time I was able to make good on my location scouting and get the first choice for the shoot. I spent some tense hours hoping that we wouldn't get rained out as we waited for the car's arrival. Fortunately we had just a few drops and the kind of clouds that make me glad to be alive. I'll share some more as we move through the project. Huge thanks to Harold for his amazing car collection, Eric for being photo slave and whoever ordered the show in the sky.

Annual Report and Industrial Photography

I recently spent a fun chunk of time with the very nice, although slightly bewildered, service people at Schomp BMW. Sadly I wasn't able to take the model from this shoot out for a night on the town and we confused more than one person as I paraded around the $98k 750li taking pictures of the floor.

The photo above is one of my favorite out-takes from a shoot last week for the company that makes the tile in all BMW service shops (and many other high tech and/or restaurant locations). Their tile is some of the strongest stuff out there. The images we created will be used in trade show displays and some of their literature.

Even though the photo isn't of a person, I must say that the thing I continue to love about being an annual report photographer and doing industrial photography is the people. I meet the nicest people at places like Schomp. It's always such a joy to have them happily work with my odd requests as I interrupt their day.

For those who care, the image you see was created almost entirely in camera. I took the liberty of removing a water spot from the floor and clearing up a few stray reflections.

Judging a book by it's cover

Here's an interesting listen from NPR. You've heard that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but there's a distinct link between the author's photo and the sales of his/her book.

There are a lot of reasons to go to a specialist in photographing people for your headshot/business card/cd cover/dust jacket photo. I always like to think of your photoshoot like a job interview. When you interview for a job you prepare fully and in advance, choose your outfit carefully, and know that image and preparation are everything. I've always felt that a headshot without makeup is like a bank interview without a suit. Fortunately I've got a load of wonderful and talented associates to send you to.

I often get calls from people looking for a headshot photographer in Denver because they need a quick and "easy" photograph. Often on a budget. I respect budgets, but sometimes you get what you pay for. An informal poll of my last several gigs reveals that almost 1/3 of my business headshots are remakes from something someone tried themselves or with a friend/spouse. A little planning can lead you to a happy experience where you walk in ready to roll and walk out before you know you've been there.

Here are a few tips to make your business portrait experience successful:

Wear clothes that make you feel good. Bring that tie or blouse that everyone says makes your eyes look amazing

Consider more than one wardrobe option. I'd love to show you completely different options from the same shoot. You never know what use you'll find for the photos.

Ask your publisher, editor, manager or whomever if they have a layout that you can bring with you. Knowing how your photo will be used helps us speed along.

It's a lazy photographer that won't photograph you in white, however, sometimes the way your photo prints influences your clothing. Tight patterns and all white can be a challenge in printing, particularly for newspaper applications.

If we're working outside the studio I'd love to help you set the schedule before you make reservations or book people. A little planning goes a long way toward effective use of your employees time.

Be happy, really! I've had clients challenge me to make a good photo of them because no one else could. We're on the same team, let's have some fun and let it show in the photos.

Headshots and a bonus

I always enjoy doing headshots for actors, models and business people because I get to meet interesting people with all kinds of good stories. I also enjoy photographing headshots because it encourages me to play around. I often try to setup two or three scenes so we can get what you need and then do at least a small handful of play shots for a little variety without a lot of extra time. This week I got to photograph Brittany for her role in the Secret Garden and a handful of other auditions. Her agent mentioned that she was also a dancer and they'd like a fun shot or two to show that. Brittany was a lot of fun to work with and she made my toes hurt just watching her up on pointe.

Las Vegas broke a single day rain record set in 1963 on the 7th...the same day as Chaun and I were supposed to be shooting in the desert. After three days of rain and three new locations trying to move around the clouds we decided to get out and capture a few shots anyway. Chaun is a very talented dancer and if you haven't caught the theme, I love photographing athletes. Hopefully we'll have more to show you when he's back from his tour in Germany!

Portraits, simple in style, not so simple in execution

It's not often that I photograph very little children outside of the furry ones that live with me. Last week I made an exception and took a break from the -5 day in Wyoming to photograph the neighbor kids. I used a pretty simple setup for the shots originally intending for them to be black and white portraits. After a little toying around and thinking that perhaps a de-saturated look would be better, I've come back to the original color shots. I didn't make the trip with a lot of lighting equipment, but fortunately my artist mom has a lot of my favorite reflector material. Foam core continues to beat the pants off of my expensive panel reflectors and for a gaggle of kids and parents it feels a lot safer. One big light, 5 pieces of foam board, two clamps that don't clamp anything, masking tape on the clamps and off we go. The little dude in the middle wanted to be there the least and is probably my favorite photo of the day.

This month has been a smattering of interesting and fun photo projects. I've done a little work photographing more high end homes for a building contractor, shot a few projects and spent a fun day at Channel 7 photographing their news anchors for an upcoming series of ads.

People remain my favorite subjects. the shot above is a fun out-take from a session I did with David and Lyndsy - both personal trainers and amazing fitness competitors. I've got several fitness projects coming up and am looking forward to them all. More to come soon!

Animal Portraits

I've decided to take a new path and compete with Art Wolfe...maybe. I'm convinced that our neighbors have a whole convenience store in their attic. This little guy/girl is always taking something up the drain pipe - whole tortillas, brownies, you know, squirrel food.

I caught this shot just as I was unloading my photo gear from a location scouting gig. I got a pretty good kick from watching the critter have a meal. I discovered that the squirrel was from NYC when it eventually folded the slice in half, and took it to the roof to eat.

A Portrait of Serendipity

Several weeks ago I was shooting an assignment on a sweltering day in a downtown Denver parking lot. As the model changed clothes I huddled in the shadow of my light box to keep from melting and was approached by a great guy who had been watching part of our shoot. He explained that the liked how we were having fun and doing what looked like great shots and asked if I could photograph his daughter. Hall and her friend Jamie came by a few weeks to shot in my Denver studio with the intention of setting them apart from their peers at school. The examples above are two of my favorite photographs from the collection. Both were a joy to work with and we all had a lot of laughs. How'd we do?

Chuck was a blast and this is a new favorite example of a 20 minute portrait. Which camera should I buy?

I get asked this a lot so I thought I’d put together a little unofficial guide to buying a camera. The following are just my opinion and none of my brand endorsements are paid for by any of the manufacturers. Even though this is titled “which camera” I’m not going to talk too much about specific models. They change all the time and I don’t have time or desire to keep up on them. I don’t really use point and shoot cameras but I’ll try to write some things to think about. Also, I’m going to use a handful of photo terms. If you don’t know what they mean, please check Google. It will be a great first step in your photographic journey.

First things first
You need to ask yourself a couple of questions, and because you’re most likely on a budget you need to prioritize the list.

What do you most want to do with the camera? Probably lots, but will you be crushed if you can’t get good landscapes or good sports shots? Do you want to do low light work or portraits or just have something durable?
How often do you see yourself using it?
How much room for growth do you want?
How much do you want the camera to think for you?

As you think about what you want to do, here are a couple of general guidelines that I follow;

A brand I haven’t heard of is a brand I won’t consider.
Often above a certain price point and within a general range anything you buy will be of comparable quality so it comes down to features and personal preference.
I like Canon, I’ve shot with them professionally for a while now and their product and service is great. If you’re a pro or semi pro you must enroll in the CPS (Canon Professional Services) program, it rocks. That said, Nikon makes good cameras too and if your choice comes down to Canon or Nikon you’re in good territory, either will be good.

Things that are important to me for point and shoot cameras

How fast does the thing start up
What is the shutter lag. If you want to do sports you need as short of a shutter lag time as you can get (the time between pushing the button and the camera actually taking the photo)
What is the widest wide shot you can get? Many PS cameras have the equivalent of a 35mm or greater wide angle - not that wide at all. If you want to take landscapes and sunsets you need a wide angle.
What is the optical zoom factor? Many will advertise a 8x optical and 140x digital zoom. Throw the digital zoom out the window, it’s not a number you want to make a decision on
Is the lens protected when not in use? Does the camera have unnecessary moving parts to protect the lens? I prefer a lens cap to a mechanical shutter, one less thing to break in my pack.
Can I have full manual control? This is a deal breaker for me. I don’t want a camera that won’t let me control my exposure.
Can I attach an external (hot shoe) flash? The flashes in PS cameras are crap, I want to use my own or have that option for growth in the future.
What is the battery life like and if this is a “travel” camera how easy is it to get replacement batteries in remote locations. I prefer a PS camera that runs on AA rechargeable batteries, I can get replacement AA’s anywhere.
Who made the lens? PS cameras can have some pretty crap-tacular lenses. Consider ones made by Leica and other reputable manufacturers.
How fast does it focus (measure camera against camera in your hand, stats aren’t nearly as important as your in-store experience). If you’re trying to catch Bigfoot you need a camera that focuses fast in daylight AND dim conditions.
How much noise does the camera introduce at higher ISO speeds? I’ve seen a lot of PS cameras with a wide ISO range but the high speed ones are so noisy that they’re unusable. This can ruin your ability to get good photos in low light.

When considering a DSLR

I should first say that for me the only considerations here are feature based. You should be considering a Canon or Nikon and making the choice between the two on fit and features. Canon and Nikon are so far ahead of anyone else that it just isn’t worth it to look elsewhere.
What’s the ISO range? Check both ends. I’ve seen some cameras lately where the low end is ISO 200, which is just retarded to me. That means that on bright days you can’t have a shallow depth of field and low-ish shutter speed. At the time of this writing I believe Canon to be the hands down winner in high speed, low noise photos across the board.
What’s the magnification factor of the chip? This is really only a question for those of you with some money to spend, but I believe that lower magnification is generally better. If your camera has a 1.6 magnification factor (as many consumer models do) then your 28mm “wide angle” lens becomes a 44mm lens and you’ll never get the landscape shots you want with that. If, however, you’re wanting to shoot wildlife and sports you may find the magnification factor to be helpful.
What’s the battery life like? This is mostly something to think about between the decision to buy newer or older models. I’m floored by how much better the battery life is in the Canon 20D from the 10D.
What’s the sync speed for external flashes? In my opinion faster is better, always. Canon, if you’re reading this I really really really want 1/500th…is that so much to ask for?
How is the TTL metering for hot-shoe flashes? This is something you’ll want to google and test for yourself.

Athletes are some of my favorite subjects. They know what's going on with their bodies and are generally pretty interesting to work with. The photo above is Ben, a natural body builder. We spent a little bit of time just playing after another shoot and came up with this result that I'm rather pleased with.

Hi everyone! (Hi Dr Nick!)

Welcome to my blog. I know there are a million of these things out there, so thanks for stopping by this one. I'm going to share some of my new and old projects from time to time in an attempt to appease those of you who nag me for never posting anything new. This is also, of course, an attempt at doing a little search engine work on my Commercial Photography website.
